A few weeks ago, Commonplace Books in Midtown, Oklahoma City was kind enough to invite me back to their store for a pop up shop during Weekend of Local. It’s always a treat to sell in person for many reasons. While I feel very connected to my loyal customers (and recognize a lot of the names of the repeat customers in my inbox!), I know the faces of very few. Meeting Kindred Spirits, old and new, face-to-face is a delight for this online shop owner, and I always leave feeling refreshed.
Here’s a brief interview Commonplace Books included in their newsletter before this event. I tend to assume most Kindred Spirits know the story behind my shop name, and other fun facts, but maybe you will read something below that is new to you …
- How did you come up with the name Carrot Top Paper Shop? The rhyming is amazing!
When I started my business, I really wanted “Paper Shop” to be part of the name because paper is so delightfully tactile and full of creative possibilities (not to mention what most of my products are made of). “Carrot Top” is a nod to my favorite literary heroine, Anne of Green Gables. When I realized they rhymed, it was a no brainer.
- Your designs are all centered on a love of reading. How did you originally come by that love?
I have fond memories of reading under the covers with a book light as a girl. I also ran a library out of my room for my friends and family. My favorite author was L.M. Montgomery, but I also loved American Girl history mysteries, Beverly Cleary’s work, the Little House books, etc. I was shaped by strong literary heroines!
- Was there someone in your life that unlocked your creativity?
My family moved to the country when I was ten years old, and my three siblings and I were all encouraged by my parents to explore outside and come up with our own forms of entertainment. My creative outlets have always been a source of life and joy for me. Even in life’s busy or difficult seasons, when I nurture my creativity, I am a much happier person.
- If you could impart some piece of wisdom to girls just beginning to explore their own creativity, what would it be?
Follow your interests wherever they lead and don’t worry if those interests don’t seem connected, or if what you are into isn’t what anyone else is into. Creativity is a great gift but it’s also a lifelong journey. Be open to wherever it may take you!
Thank you again to Commonplace Books for their kind hospitality, and to everyone who came out for this event! Wherever you live, know that shopping locally is so much more than just supporting your local economy. It is such an encouragement to local artists and shop owners!
